Early Years Inquiry

The Scottish Parliament's Education Committee launched an inquiry into early years (preschool) childcare and education provision in February 2005. The Committee has received written evidence from interested parties and will shortly begin taking oral evidence.

Aim of the Inquiry

To examine progress by the Scottish Executive to deliver effective early years education and childcare in the light of Partnership Agreement commitments and forthcoming policy announcements. In particular:
  • support for parenting
  • the relative impact of collective and individual caring on children’s development
  • flexibility of childcare provision
  • availability of choice
  • provision in low income areas

The Committee has appointed Professor Kathy Sylva of Oxford University as an adviser to this inquiry.
