Cross Party Group on Children and Young People, 20/12/04 [S]

The most recent meeting of the Cross-Party Group on Children and Young People was held on 20 December 2004. Chaired by Robin Harper MSP, Peter Peacock, Minister for Education and Young People gave an overview of current and future concerns followed by an audience question and answer session.

Mr Peacock outlined the following areas of work for 2005 :

  • Greater focus on the integration of children's services with the overall purpose of helping young people to achieve their potential

  • A change in the Executive's priorities to embrace ambitions for young people and equipping young people to achieve them

  • In terms of education the curriculum review will focus on opening vocational options for pupils and better motivating pupils, and implementation of the Additional Support for Learning Act

  • Second stage of the Children's Hearings Review and the Adoption Review

  • Completion of the Youth Work Strategy

  • In relation to early years the Integrated Strategy for the Early Years will be finalised in the early part of the year and early years workforce review will look at progress between areas of the workforce

Questions were asked in relation to the following topics :
  • Implementation of the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003 in relation to volunteers and the voluntary sector

  • Publication of the Sexual Health Strategy

  • Implementation of the McCabe Report

  • A strategic approach towards achieving integrated, universal services for children

  • Integrated Inspections

  • Youth Work Strategy

  • Universal sight-screening of school pupils

  • Child Impact Strategy

  • Children and young people's awareness of the UNCRC
