Career Advice and Subject Choice Oral Question, 18/03/15 [S]

During Portfolio Question Time on 18 March 2015 Nanette Milne (Con) asked the Scottish Government what recent discussions have taken place between the SQA and local authorities regarding pupilsí career advice and subject choice.

The Minister for Leaning, Science and Scotland's Languages replied, that the Scottish Qualifications Authority has regular meetings with local authorities in its role as Scotlandís national qualifications body. Through that, and through engagement with employers, SQA seeks to ensure that all its qualifications help learners to develop skills for learning, life and work. It also provides a range of specific work-related qualifications. However, advice on careers and subject choices is a matter for Skills Development Scotland, local authorities and individual schools.

SDS is also working with education partners including schools on a number of pilots that are seeking to understand and tackle the causes of educational and occupational segregation.
