Violence Against Women Motion, 20/11/14 [S]

Motion lodged before the Scottish Parliament on 20 November 2014 by Jackie Baillie (Lab) on 16 Days for the Elimination of Violence against Women.†

The full text of the motion reads:

That the Parliament joins many organisations in Scotland and across the world in supporting the campaign, 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which will run from 25 November to 10 December 2014; notes that the campaign has been held annually since 1991 and starts on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on Human Rights Day; views this period as an appropriate time to highlight the link between gender-based violence and human rights; commends the many organisations that raise awareness of such violence; understands that, each year since 2009, the number of incidents of domestic abuse in Scotland has risen, with 60,080 incidents recorded by the police in 2012-13; welcomes Scotlandís first ever strategy for eradicating violence against women and girls, which was published by the Scottish Government and COSLA in June 2014, but recognises that there is much more to be done to eliminate gender-based violence and promote gender equality in Scotland and worldwide.
