On the edge. ChildLine spotlight: suicide, 31/10/14, [E/NI/S/W]

There has been a significant increase in the number of children and young people contacting ChildLine about suicidal feelings. This report looks at what young people have told ChildLine and what they need when they are already distressed and contemplating taking their own lives. It advises that the stigma of suicide means that the adults in their lives, including professionals, are failing to spot the signs, finding it hard to listen to their distress, and are providing inadequate levels of support.

The report’s recommendations suggest that simple changes in the way young people are listened to and supported can make a big difference – helping more to get support earlier, and breaking the silence and stigma that surrounds the issue of suicide.
