Universal credit implementation: monitoring DWP’s performance in 2012-13, 09/04/14 [E/S/W]

The Commons Work and Pensions Committee has published a report on Universal credit implementation.

National roll-out of Universal Credit was due to begin in October 2013. However, new claims are not expected to be extended to the whole of Great Britain until 2016 and the bulk of existing claimants will not move over to Universal Credit until 2016-17.

The Committee’s inquiry into the government's flagship benefit system concludes that it has wasted millions of pounds. The Committee says that worrying uncertainty remains over the computer system being used to bring in the new single payment, including how it will work, how much it will cost and who will develop it. The report also accuses the government of "hampering" the Committee's inquiry into the system.
