Rural Schools Oral Question, 08/01/14 [S]

During Question Time on 8 January 2014 Dennis Robertson (SNP) asked the Scottish Government what the next steps are following the moratorium on rural school closures.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Michael Russell, replied that following the moratorium and the report of the commission on the delivery of rural education, he is taking forward amendments to the legislation on school closures. It is expected those amendments will improve the consultation process for all school closure proposals and to clarify the presumption against closure for rural schools specifically.

Parents and communities deserve an open and honest consultation process and decision making that is transparent. They also deserve to have a real say in decisions that affect them. It is expected these amendments, along with improvements to the statutory guidance in relation to the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010, will deliver that.
