A Donation and Transplantation Plan For Scotland 2013-2020, 11/07/13 [S]

The Scottish Government has published the new Donation and Transplantation Plan for Scotland which sets out priorities for action over the period to 2020, in order for Scotland to be one of the best performing countries in terms of organ donation in the world.

The Plan identifies five priorities the Government wishes to deliver:

  • increasing the number of people who have made their wishes about organ donation known;
  • increasing the availability of organs;
  • making every donation count;
  • ensuring NHSScotland supports donation and transplantation;
  • and ensuring the public in Scotland is informed and engaged about donation and transplantation.

The Plan sets out 21 recommendations to deliver these priorities including:

  • deliver more high-profile and effective campaigns
  • continue to work with the black, asian and minority ethnic communities
  • involve Specials Nurse for Organ Donation in all discussions with family members
  • await the evaluation of the move to opt-out in Wales before making any decision about the introduction of opt-out in Scotland.
