Rural Schools Ministerial Statement, 09/06/11 [S]

During the meeting of the Scottish Parliament on 9 June 2011 the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Michael Russell, made a statement on rural schools.

The Cabinet Secretary plans to establish a Commission on the Delivery of Rural Education to consider the provision of education in rural communities and to take a comprehensive look at the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010, which includes a clear legislative presumption against the closure of such schools and the need for educational benefits to be the driving force in any proposed closure.

He has also proposed a year long moratorium on rural school closures.
