A Quick Guide to Help with Health Costs, 31/03/11 [S]

The Scottish Government has published a leaflet with information about health costs (dental and optical) and help that may be available.

Free NHS Dental treatment is available to those under 18 and those who are pregnant or have borne a child within the 12 months before treatment starts. Young people in full time education are eligible for free NHS dental treatment for any course of treatment starting before their 19th birthday.

NHS Optical vouchers are available to those aged uder 16, and young people aged 16, 17 and 18 who are in full time education.

Prescription charges were abolished on 1 April 2011. No charge is applied to drugs and appliances dispensed by a community pharmacist or dispensing GP practice. No charge is applied to wigs and fabric supports supplied through a hospital service.

The following are also free:

  • medication administered at a hospital;
  • prescribed contraceptives;
  • medication personally administered by a GP;
  • medication supplied by a hospital for the treatment of a sexually transmissible infection ( STI); and
  • medication prescribed for the treatment of tuberculosis ( TB).
