Equal Opportunities Committee takes evidence on the disability inquiry, 21/03/06 [S]

During its meeting on 21 March 2006 the Equal Opportunities Committee took evidence on the disability inquiry. The focus of the evidence session was leisure. Giving evidence were various leisure providers. Matters discussed included planning and access, funding, and the active schools programme.

One key issue arising during the meeting was identifying and getting information to young people.

During the meeting Sportscotland said that they have been working with local authorities and Scottish governing bodies of sports, and are involved in the active schools programme, which ensures that all young people at school have access to sport. They said that this programme is a key mechanism by which they can access young people with a disability. Sportscotland said that they want to emphasise to young people with a disability that physical activity and sport is available to them, so that they will continue with physical activity and sport throughout their lives.
