Civil Partnership Bill receives Royal Assent 19/11/04 [E/NI/S/W]
Legislation to give legal recognition to same-sex couples for the first time has received Royal Assent.

School Education (Ministerial Powers and Independent Schools) (Scotland) Act 2004 [S]
This Act introduces new Ministerial powers to intervene, on the recommendation of the Inspectorate, to ensure that necessary action is taken by a local authority to secure improvement in schools. The powers would apply to all schools in Scotland. The Act also contains several measures to update the registration and monitoring system for independent schools.

Child Trust Funds Act 2004 [E/NI/S/W]
The Act sets up payments to children born from September 2002. The payment is initially set at 250 with an additional 250 to children in families on low incomes. Payment will be made into a Child Trust Fund.

Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004 [S]
The Act makes changes to the way in which councillors are elected, reduces the age qualification for candidates standing for election, changes the way councillors are remunerated and introduces a one-off severance scheme.

Anti-Social Behaviour etc. (Scotland) Act 2004 [S]
This act makes provisions in connection with antisocial behaviour, criminal justice and in relation to child welfare, and for connected purposes. The act was passed in June 2004.

Identity Cards Act [E/NI/S/W]
The purpose of this Act is to provide a legislative basis for identity cards in the UK.

Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 [S]
The act makes provision for additional support in connection with the school education of children and young persons having additional support needs; and for connected purposes. The act was passed on 1 April 2004.

Vulnerable Witnesses (Scotland) Act 2004 [S]
Vulnerable Witnesses (Scotland) Act makes provision for the use of special measures for the purpose of taking the evidence of children and other vulnerable witnesses in criminal or civil proceedings. The Act was passed on 4 March 2004.

Civil Partnership Act [E/NI/S/W]
The purpose of the Civil Partnership Act is to enable same-sex couples to obtain legal recognition of their relationship by forming a civil partnership which they may do by registering as civil partners of each other.
